After the success of our Channel 4 News redesign, Clearleft was asked to help bring the same level of “design thinking” to the mobile experience. Working with their technical partners at Mobile IQ, Clearleft set about re-imagining the Channel 4 News service for tablet and smart phone use.
As the News site was such a success, it would have been easy to repurpose the existing site for mobile delivery. However, our research showed that users exhibited different behaviour between desktop and mobile services. Desktop and smart phone users tended to present goal-driven behaviour and would typically navigate to specific chunks of information. By contrast, tablet users demonstrated a more leisurely approach that pointed at a visually-rich, linear solution. Using this insight, we created an experiential browsing mechanism driven by story headlines and high quality imagery. This made it easy for users to casually flip through stories, honing in on anything that caught the eye.
The new Channel 4 News app proved to be a huge success. Shortly after its launch Apple featured it as “App of the Week”, making it the number one news application and shortly after the number three free application that month. In a few short weeks the application received over one hundred positive reviews, with an average rating of 4.5 stars.
